SPEAKER: Dr. Dmitri Kossakovski, Managing Director of ZT Plus
http://www.ztplus.com/

Thermoelectric (TE) technology allows a direct conversion of heat to electricity and electricity to heat/cold by means of solid state semiconductor materials.  TE is quiet (no moving parts), clean (no gaseous pollutants) and lends itself to distributed use.  Today's TE technology is less efficient than its electromechanical counterparts (two-phase air conditioners or diesel/gasoline engines). However, a variety of niche applications are well served by this technology including electronics thermal management and personal climate control in the automotive applications.  Additionally, TE can be used for converting waste heat into electricity in the automotive and industrial processes.  European regulations force automotive OEMs to consider TE as a possible alternative to meet the stringent controls of the CO2 emissions.  Additionally, recent progress in TE semiconductors promises efficiency improvements on the device level.  The talk will cover the technology basics, existing applications and directions of business and technology development which are to a large extent driven by the cleantech/sustainability societal needs.

Dr. Dmitri Kossakovski is a managing director of ZT Plus in Azusa, CA which is a semiconductor R&D and production company in the field of TE materials.  ZT Plus is a division of Amerigon, Inc. (www.amerigon.com), a NASDAQ-traded company which is the world leader in automotive applications of TE technology.  Amerigon's primary product is Climate Controlled Seat, CCS, currently available as an optional or standard feature on a large variety of vehicles. Amerigon and ZT Plus are funded by DOE, and partnered with Ford and BMW, to demonstrate prototypes of TE generators in passenger vehicles.  Dr. Kossakovski received his degree in Physical Chemistry from California Institute of Technology.
